Itโs time to dust off those snow boots and button up your big coats because wintertime is here! The D.C. region is loaded with activities and winter fun for everyone, including skiing, ice skating, sledding and more. This month weโre looking at our top five winter fun undertakings to get you outside and enjoy the crisp hibernal air.
Skiing at Whitetail Resort
This four-season ski resort is the nearest to Washington, D.C. at just 90 minutes away. We love these slopes because they cater to both novice and experienced skiers. However, if youโre feeling too nervous for even the bunny slopes, there is a super fun snow tubing park serving up winter fun for everyone. Be sure to book far in advance or purchase a season pass, as Whitetail will be limiting the number of guests on the mountain this season due to COVID-19. 13805 Blairs Valley Road,
Mercersburg, Pa. 17236 skiwhitetail.com
Sledding on Capitol Hill
Few things scream winter fun for everyone in the district like sledding the hills of the Capitol building after a fresh snow. The backdrop of the National Mall against the glistening white snow is enough to make even the Scroogiest of Scrooges crack a smile. Sledding here was banned between 2001 and 2015 but was reinstated after D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton added language for it in a federal spending bill. Thank you, Congresswoman Norton! First St. SE, Washington, D.C. 20004
Outdoor Ice Skating at The Washington Harbour
This outdoor ice skating rink is open every day, including holidays, until March 13, so there is absolutely no excuse to miss out on this winter fun for everyone in your family. Reach out to The Washington Harbour to learn how you and your little ones as young as 3 can participate together in a group skating class. For the night owls in your family, the rink is lit up with dazzling snowflakes and stays open late until 9 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends. 3000-3050 K St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20007 thewashingtonharbour.com/ice-skating
Indoor Ice Skating at Cabin John Ice Rink
Skating at one of the two indoor ice skating facilities in Montgomery County, Md., Cabin John Ice Rink, is the perfect year-round activity and winter fun pastime. Here you can find three different styled rinks (NHL, Olympic and Studio); rentable dance studio and party rooms; a pro shop offering equipment, apparel and repair services; and a cafe with complimentary Wi-Fi. Visit their website for special family and teen skating sessions as well as information for their youth hockey team. 10610 Westlake Drive, Rockville, Md. 20852 montgomeryparks.org/parks-and-trails/cabin-john-regional-park/cabin-john-ice-rink
Hiking at Seneca Creek State Park
Seneca Creek State Park is a family favorite all year round but can be especially breathtaking in the winter. We recommend a stroll down Lake Shore Trail (be on the lookout for the occasional slippery slope and rocky terrain) which takes you across Clopper Lake and past beautiful wintry views. Afterward, take the young ones to the recycled-tire playground to play on the giant tire swing, zip line and tire dragon! 11950 Clopper Road, Gaithersburg, Md. 20878 dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/central/seneca.aspx
