Juneteenth is a time for celebration and reflection with the whole family. Juneteenth โ also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day โ is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of African Americans who had been enslaved in the United States. People honor Juneteenth in many ways, from parties and parades to memorials and lessons. Itโs a time to share stories of resilience, resistance and liberation and to uplift Black joy. See below for a list of family-friendly Juneteenth celebrations in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
JUNE 14th
What we Commemorate on Juneteenth

From the pages of history series. Over the course of four years, enslaved people worked to turn the Civil War into a freedom war, and to compel Abraham Lincoln to issue abolish slavery.

Reframing the Narrative
- Time: Shows at 1.30 pm & 7.30 pm
- Location: John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, NW Washington D.C.
The Kennedy Center hosts a fascinating program timed perfectly with Juneteenth. The week-long celebration will offer dynamic performances by the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Ballethnic Dance Company and Collage Dance Collective, along with other Black-identifying ballet dancers from across the United States.

JUNE 17th
Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony and Unity Walk
- Time: 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
- Location: Mount Rainier, MD
A flag-raising ceremony and unity walk will mark the Cityโs Juneteenth celebration. Join the City of Mount Rainier and the towns of North Brentwood and Brentwood as we walk towards Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center to unite and celebrate this significant holiday and reinforce our commitment to liberty and justice for all.
JUNE 18th
National Archives: Juneteenth Family Day and Emancipation Proclamation Display
- Time: 10 am to 2 pm
- Location: Constitution Avenue at 9th Street, NW Washington D.C.
The National Archives Museum will display the original Emancipation Proclamation and General Order No. 3 documents from June 18 to 20. The museum will also host โJuneteenth Family Dayโ including author book talks, crafting and activities, a panel discussion and a musical performance.
The Museum will be open for extended hours of 10 am to 7 pm for Juneteenth weekend.
Prince Georgeโs County Juneteenth Hybrid Festival
- Time: 12 pm to 5 pm
- Location: Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro, MD
Visit Watkins Regional park for this free family event featuring arts and crafts, live music, puppet shows, a scavenger hunt and artifacts and murals on display. As a part of our ongoing mission to provide exciting and unique cultural programming to county residents, the Juneteenth celebration is a must-attend event that will surely delight all.
Juneteenth Celebration at Ida Lee Park
- Time: 12 pm
- Location: Ida Lee Park, Leesburg, VA
The โBURGโ Family Reunion Club is pleased to announce their second annual Juneteenth Celebration 2022. The event will feature performances from musical acts including the Chuck Brown Band and the Howard Harmonizers. There will be food and product vendors and a voter registration booth. There will also be a school supply drive to help support African-American students that attend Frederick Douglass Elementary School in Leesburg.

Juneteenth Poetry Jam

Bethel AME Church is hosting a Juneteenth Poetry Jam to celebrate Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day. It is open to the community and will feature Ms. Kim B.
Juneteenth Sisterhood Supper

This Juneteenth, we’re celebrating the power of sisterhood and cooking for change in our communities with storytelling, sharing gardening/foraging tips & recipes of restoration, and policy solutions. Also, we are honoring local food sheroes and supporting the Food Shero Freedom Fund. Become a part of history and contribute to the Sisterhood Community Cookbook with your family photos and recipes that honor mamas, aunties, and nanas because our story matters.

MCC’s Celebration of Juneteenth with The Alphabet Rockers

Paint Night on the Patio
