Video Game Subscriptions
Each major console has a unique subscription service that allows the holder to access a vast library of games. Similar to Netflix and other media streaming services, this does not grant ownership over copies of these games, but instead the ability to download and play them while this subscription is active. This allows for experimentation and access to a wide variety of titles your child might not have otherwise been able to explore. Be aware that titles cycle on and off, and there is no guarantee a given title will be available, but in our experience, there are always a few titles that will catch any gamerโs attention.
Microsoftโs GamePass has options for those who want to play on XBox or on a PC. Widely considered to be the most expansive gaming subscription, it offers big titles and indie gems alike. Both options can be bundled together if you have versatile gamers in your family.
PlayStation Plus, for the PlayStation consoles, is Sonyโs subscription service that allows you to play online, but its higher tiers, Extra and Premium, offer a broad library of games to access and enjoy. Extra grants access to the โGame Catalog,โ a broad selection of PS4 and PS5 games. The Premium tier adds on access to the โClassics Catalog,โ a collection of games from the PS1, PS2 and PS3.
If your child is interested in classic games and has a Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Online service is perfect for them. In addition to granting the ability for online play, it grants access to a collection of games from Nintendoโs oldest consoles โ the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and the Game Boy. The Expansion Pass version of the service expands the selection to include some of Nintendoโs later systems, including the Nintendo 64 and the Game Boy Advance. Itโs a smaller library, and one focused on older games, but contains many iconic, genre-defining titles that are beloved to this day.
