The Little Forest Keepers By Mary Lundquist HarperCollins, 2021, $17.99
On a snowy day, two elves ensure their woodland neighbors – birds, rabbits, squirrels – are comfortable and well-fed. When they come upon a strange, white creature, they are scared at first and then realize it is harmless and lonely. With the help of their forest friends, they figure out how to care for it, too. The simple text and innocent, expressive figures in the illustrations make for a gentle book about sharing and kindness.

The book subtly hints at the father’s previous incarceration. In the back matter, author/illustrator Katie Yamasaki lists organizations that assist the formerly incarcerated in finding jobs (one is On the Rise Bakery in Detroit) and describes her own work as an artist in correctional facilities.
