Who We Are

Selected as one of 25 model Summer Schools in the Arts by the National Endowment for the Arts, Traveling Players Ensemble is dedicated to bringing great theatre into the great outdoors.

Small troupes of young actors are carefully guided by professional theatre artists to perform in outdoor amphitheaters. We offer a range of programs for campers between 3rd - 12th grade, with one week beginner actor training all the way up to advanced, intensive acting training in our 5- and 7-week summer camp programs.

Each session culminates in a fully mounted and designed performance which tours to several locations, cultivating stronger, more adaptable and capable artists and individuals. Venues range from other camps and libraries, to Shenandoah National Park and Colonial Williamsburg.

Traveling Players emphasizes a meaningful engagement with nature. Our unique day camp (Monday-Friday) features a campout every Thursday - when performers learn Leave No Trace camping techniques, to pitch tents and cook outdoors. As artists and backpackers, campers learn self-reliance and creative problem solving, and gain an appreciation of challenges and beauty.

All camps include daily bus transportation from MD, DC and VA. The camper-to-staff ratio is 4:1.

What Others Say

My son and daughter have attended Traveling Players camps and classes for many years. It is the most important activity in both of their lives. The instruction in classical theatre is incomparable. The outdoor skills and experiences are phenomenal. And the friendships and close, supportive community of kids are priceless. - Parent, 2008-13

Traveling Players has been a staple of my existence these past few years, one that has matured me as a person, supported me as an unsure adolescent, developed me as an actor and a performer, and given me not only connection to the most tightly woven community of kids, parents, and teachers I've ever seen, and to the majority of the people whom I now call my closest friends. - Camper, 2006-10
