Who We Are

Acorn Hill is devoted to providing quality programs to meet the physical, social-emotional, and mental developmental needs of your child. Established in 1964, we have occupied our present, natural wooded site off Sligo Creek in Silver Spring since 1977. We are a certified Waldorf school and licensed by the Office of Childcare, Maryland State Department of Education.

As a Waldorf school, we believe that play is the serious work of childhood and learning by doing provides the foundation for critical thinking, problem solving and a lifelong enthusiasm for knowledge. Our ongoing work with diversity, equity and justice has led us into an inquiry of the benefits of racial and ethnic diversity for the individual child and for the Acorn Hill community. We hold an evolving vision for advancing diversity in our consciousness, our curriculum, and our community, and appreciate the willingness of our Acorn Hill community to confront societal issues in order to strengthen our program and better serve the children of our area.

Our morning and full-day programs are designed for children 2 and 1/2 to 6 years old with parent-child classes for infants, toddlers and younger children. We surround our children with simple experiences that teach the world in a gentle way by letting them do things directly themselves, trusting their innate stages of growth and guarding them from sensory overload. Children are served natural, nutritious snacks and enjoy a daily rhythm of activities including free indoor and outdoor play, songs, stories, puppet plays, and other tasks such as beeswax modeling, baking, gardening, handwork or sewing, water-color painting, wood-working, and seasonal crafts.

We recognize the significance of experiences in early childhood for an individual's later development and use age appropriate approaches for teaching. Our curriculum is based on the ideas of Austrian philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner whose insights into the developing consciousness of the human being have now been verified by modern neuro-physiological studies.
